Press Release
Issued by the Association of Parliamentarians for Jerusalem and Palestine
Concerning the Critical Deterioration in the Health Condition of Imprisoned MP Mohammad Jamal Al-Natsheh
The Association of Parliamentarians for Jerusalem and Palestine is following, with deep concern, the serious deterioration in the health condition of Palestinian Legislative Council member Mohammad Jamal Al-Natsheh, who is imprisoned in Israeli occupation prisons after being subjected to brutal torture during interrogation.
According to reports from prisoners’ rights organizations and human rights media outlets, MP Al-Natsheh was transferred, just days after his arrest, from "Ofer" Prison to "Hadassah" Hospital in critical condition, suffering from brain hemorrhage, kidney failure, and falling into a complete coma, before being moved to the Ramla Prison Hospital, where he currently lies in a shocking state that reflects the extent of the violations he endured during interrogation.
The Association strongly condemns the Israeli authorities' refusal to allow MP Al-Natsheh’s lawyer to meet with him, considering this behavior an additional crime within a systematic policy aimed at preventing legal and medical oversight of the grave abuses inflicted on detainees.
The critical health condition of MP Al-Natsheh clearly indicates that he was subjected to systematic torture amounting to a slow assassination attempt, in blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, particularly the Fourth Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, which obligates the occupying power to provide protection and medical care for detainees.
The Association stresses that MP Al-Natsheh’s case is not an isolated incident but part of a widespread approach affecting hundreds of Palestinian prisoners who suffer from torture and denial of legal and medical visits, with the aim of extracting forced confessions.
The Association holds the occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of MP Mohammad Al-Natsheh and calls upon the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations, and in particular the relevant Special Rapporteurs on human rights, to intervene urgently to uncover his fate and conditions of detention, and to ensure he receives the necessary medical care.
We call on all parliaments and international human rights organizations to take serious action to put an end to these criminal practices against representatives of the Palestinian people.
We affirm that the continued repression of members of the Palestinian Legislative Council reflects a systematic targeting of Palestinian political representation and undermines any prospects for a just political process.
