The Association of Parliamentarians for Jerusalem and Palestine Condemns Hungary’s Decision to Withdraw from the International Criminal Court
The Association of Parliamentarians for Jerusalem and Palestine expresses its strong condemnation of the Hungarian government's decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), a move that coincided with its official reception of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is currently the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Court on charges related to war crimes in Gaza.
This decision represents a dangerous retreat from Hungary’s international obligations to uphold accountability for war crimes. It undermines global efforts to achieve international justice and sets a harmful precedent that encourages impunity and shields perpetrators from prosecution. By withdrawing from the ICC, Hungary signals support for a war criminal who continues to commit acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
This withdrawal does not absolve Hungary of its responsibility in facilitating the political rehabilitation of an individual accused of ongoing atrocities in Gaza—including collective punishment, the deliberate starvation of civilians, and the targeted killing of children and medics—as well as continued Israeli aggression in Syria, all in violation of international law and humanitarian conventions.
The Association calls on the United Nations, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take decisive action and apply maximum pressure on the supporters of the Israeli occupation, particularly the United States, which continues to offer political, military, and financial protection to the occupying power despite its repeated violations of international law.
The Association further urges governments in Arab, Islamic, and free world countries to summon U.S. ambassadors and present them with formal letters of protest against their government’s blatant bias and continued support for crimes against humanity.
We stress that actions such as Hungary’s withdrawal from the ICC seriously undermine the credibility of international institutions and weaken the global justice system, which is meant to hold perpetrators of crimes against humanity accountable. Hosting officials accused of war crimes amounts to complicity, and sends the wrong message to the international community regarding any genuine commitment to the rule of law and international justice.
