The League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds and Palestine Welcomes the Spanish Parliament’s Adoption of a Recommendation to Ban Arms Exports to Israel
Press Release
The League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds and Palestine welcomes the Spanish Parliament’s adoption of a recommendation calling for a ban on arms exports to Israel and urges firmer European positions
The League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds and Palestine has closely followed the Spanish Parliament’s approval of a recommendation calling for a ban on exporting weapons to the Israeli occupation, amid the ongoing genocidal war against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
While welcoming this significant development in the Spanish stance, the League commends the courageous positions expressed by several parliamentary blocs and political parties—foremost among them, Podemos and Sumar—for their support of the recommendation and their call to end all forms of military cooperation with the occupation, including suspending diplomatic relations.
The League urges the Spanish Parliament to translate this recommendation into binding legislation and take concrete steps to freeze all types of military and security support to the occupation. It also calls on the Spanish government to align with this parliamentary direction and adopt firmer policies toward the war crimes being committed against the Palestinian people.
The League stresses that continued arms exports to the occupation constitute complicity in its ongoing crimes and contribute to fueling the conflict and obstructing the prospects for a just and comprehensive peace.
Furthermore, the League calls on all European parliaments to fulfill their legal and moral responsibilities by enacting national legislation that criminalizes arms exports to the occupation and strengthens European public and governmental support for the rights of the Palestinian people—foremost among them, the rights to freedom, return, and self-determination.
The League emphasizes the urgent need to activate international accountability mechanisms, prosecute Israeli war criminals before international courts, and work to end the culture of impunity that has emboldened the occupation to continue committing massacres and violations.
This parliamentary recommendation is a step in the right direction, but what is needed is to turn it into concrete measures that end Western support for the Israeli killing machine and restore respect for human values and international justice.
